LONDON: Although Portugal have been eliminated from Euro 2020, Cristiano Ronaldo still has a chance to take home the individual award.

Currently, the Portuguese captain still tops the list of top scorers of the tournament when he recorded five goals until the end of the round of 16 best.

He has a one -goal advantage over his nearest challenger ahead of the quarter -finals.

Portugal’s mission to defend the European championship failed after losing to Belgium in the round of 16.

The result was even more disappointing for Ronaldo individually when he failed to score a goal in the match, so he is still one goal short of breaking the record for the most scorer of all time owned by Iranian football legend, Ali Daei.

The 36-year-old striker scored his 108th and 109th goals for his country against Hungary in the group stage to match the record held by Daei for 15 years.

However, Ronaldo missed the opportunity to break the record in the Euro campaign this time after Portugal lost 0-1 at the hands of Belgium.

The situation saw him have to wait to break that record at least until next September when Portugal face the Republic of Ireland in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Armed with five goals, Ronaldo has a chance to win the Euro 2020 Golden Shoe award if he takes into account the number of goals scored by the winner in the tournament since 1984 except for the 2016 edition which saw Antoine Griezmann from France score six goals.

French strikers Karim Benzema, Patrick Schick (Czech Republic) and Emil Forsberg (Sweden), share the top scorers list after each recording four goals so far.

However, only Schick still has a chance to overtake Ronaldo on the list after France and Sweden were eliminated from the competition.

Romelu Lukaku (Belgium), Raheem Sterling (England), Georgino Wijnaldum (Netherlands) and Robert Lewandowski (Poland) shared third place with three goals.
