PARIS: The Champions League match between Paris Saint-Germain and Istanbul Basaksehir was postponed early this morning and will resume early tomorrow morning after the players left the field for protesting against match officials who allegedly uttered racist words.

The incident came after Basaksehir assistant coach Pierre Webo, a former Cameroon player, was sent off for an altercation outside the pitch involving fourth referee Sebastian Coltescu.

The match at the Parc des Princes had to be stopped in the 14th minute when the score was still 0-0, and the players left the field 10 minutes later.

The European Football Association (UEFA) in a statement promised to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident and confirmed that the match would be resumed early tomorrow morning from the minute it stopped.

Danny Makkelie from the Netherlands will referee matches with other match officials from the Netherlands and Poland.

In television footage, it is clear to hear Webo repeatedly asking why racist words are used to refer to him.

“The black one over there. This is not possible. Go identify him. The man, the black one,” Coltescu said referring to Webo in the recording.

Basaksehir player from Senegal, Demba Ba, was also recorded saying: “When you refer to white people, you never say ‘this white man’, you just say ‘this man’, so why when you mention black man you should say ‘this black man?’ ”

The incident also caught the attention of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who wanted UEFA to take appropriate action on the matter.
