BERLIN: Robert Lewandowski equaled Gerd Mueller’s 49-year-old scoring record as the Bayern Munich striker blasted home his 40th Bundesliga goal of the season after his side’s 2-2 draw with Freiburg last night.

Lewandowski equaled Mueller’s record made in 34 games in 1971/72, in just 28 league games this season.

“It’s a great honor for me and for the modern history of the Bundesliga,” Lewandowski told Sky.

Lewandowski completed a penalty for the champions after 26 minutes to equal Mueller’s record.

While celebrating the penalty, the Polish striker lifted the jersey he was wearing to show a picture of Gerd Mueller with the words “4ever Gerd.”

“I never imagined that this could happen. What Gerd Mueller did was something amazing. Sharing the record with him made me very, very proud,” Lewandowski said.

Lewandowski could still break Mueller’s record when Bayern have one game in the campaign this time around at home to Augsburg next Saturday.
