MADRID: Real Madrid secured progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in three years after beating Atalanta 3-1 on rematch and 4-1 on aggregate.

Sergio Ramos marked his return from injury by completing a penalty after Karim Benzema continued his sharpness in front of goal by punishing a mistake by Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Sportiello.

After a fierce start for Zinedine Zidane’s squad, Atalanta struggled to bounce back and just closed the gap through Luis Muriel before Marco Asensio blasted home Madrid’s third goal.

Ramos played more than an hour in his second appearance since recovering from a knee injury while Benzema’s goal was his eighth in eight games, and the French striker’s 70th Champions League goal-the fifth to reach that figure.

Cristiano Ronaldo leads the scoring list with 134 goals, followed by Lionel Messi (120), Robert Lewandowski (72) and Raul Gonzalez (71).
