MADRID: Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos will leave the club after 16 successful seasons, the La Liga giants announced yesterday.

Real said they will hold a special event for Ramos today which will be attended by club president Florentino Perez.

Ramos, 35, has struggled with injuries this season and has only played five times since the start of the year.

Playing in 21 appearances for Real Madrid in all competitions this season is the lowest for the player throughout his time with the club.

In total Ramos played 671 games for Real, scoring 101 goals.

Ramos joined Madrid from Sevilla in 2005, the only Spanish player brought in when Perez became president.

He became the club’s most successful player by winning five La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and two Spanish King’s Cups.

However, this season Ramos has dropped out of many games after being confirmed positive for COVID-19 as well as a series of injuries to his legs.

He was listed for Madrid’s last game in La Liga against Villarreal, but did not play.

According to the Spanish media, Real and Ramos failed to reach a decision on the renewal of their contracts which will end on June 30.

The club wants to offer a one -year extension with a 10 per cent cut on his salary now in the wake of the pandemic, but Ramos wants a two -year extension.

The veteran defender was also dropped from the Spanish squad for the ongoing Euro 2020 competition.

The absence of Ramos means that none of the Madrid players will line up for the Spanish squad this time around.

Ramos has also been the most frequent player to represent Spain in 180 games. With 23 goals, he is the eighth highest scorer in the country.

He represented Spain in four editions of the World Cup and three European Championships. Ramos is one of the pillars of the team that won the 2010 World Cup as well as the 2008 and 2012 European Championships.
