LONDON: Manchester City added pressure on Mikel Arteta as the League Cup champions reached the semi-finals after beating Arsenal 4-1.

It was Arsenal’s fourth defeat in their last six games in all competitions.

Gabriel Jesus needed just three minutes to put City ahead in the quarter-finals at the Emirates Stadium.

Alexandre Lacazette equalized, but Arsenal failed to prevent Pep Guardiola’s men from continuing to score.

Arsenal goalkeeper Alexs Runarsson made a mistake by letting Riyad Mahrez’s free kick pass him.

Phil Foden and Aymeric Laporte also found a target to continue to put pressure on Arsenal.

“It’s hard to swallow if the journey of this match is taken into account. Opponents like this, if you give them easy goals, it makes this game difficult.

“A lot of weird things happen in every game and it makes it harder.

“Runarsson did not play much for us. We all made mistakes and had to support him,” said Arteta, whose position as operator began to be questioned.

Guardiola, however, defended Arteta – his former assistant at City, saying: “He is a great manager. I know his recommendations and what he will do.

“Bad decisions will not change my opinion.”

In another quarter-final action, the Brentford Championship League club, stunned the Newcastle Premier League team 1-0 thanks to a Josh Dasilva goal.

Thomas Frank’s side have eliminated West Bromwich Albion, Southampton and Fulham on their way to the quarterfinals.
