PARIS: Karim Benzema had to leave the field due to fatigue this morning as world champions France beat Bulgaria 3-0 in the last friendly, a week before starting the Euro 2020 campaign.

Benzema was sent off in the 39th minute at the Stade De France which was France’s last match before they face Germany in the opening match of Group F of the European Championship on June 15.

France will also face defending champions Portugal and Hungary, who will play two group matches in front of a large crowd near Budapest’s Puskas Arena.

The 33 -year -old Benzema was called back to the national team after six years on the sidelines but his successor Olivier Giroud showed why Les Bleus were considered favorites at the tournament with two late goals to increase his tally for France to 46.

Giroud, 34, is now just five goals behind France’s all -time leading scorer Thierry Henry but looks set to be ruled out if Benzema returns.

“When people call me, the most important thing is to perform a given task,” Giroud told M6 broadcaster.
