Emery’s Revenge Against Arsenal

LONDON: Villarreal will face Manchester United in the Europa League final after the Spanish club held on for a 0-0 draw at Arsenal a moment ago and prevented all Premier League representatives from reaching the European final.

Two attempts by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit the crossbar for Arsenal, but a 2-1 aggregate defeat means the Gunners will miss the Champions League for the fifth time in a row.

Ranked ninth in the Premier League, Arsenal’s season depends on success in the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League.

But former Gunners boss Unai Emery managed to get revenge after being sacked just after 18 months as Arsene Wenger’s successor by leading Villarreal to their first European final.

Emery has won the tournament three times with Sevilla and also led Arsenal to the Europa League final in his debut season at the Emirates.

The Spaniard was criticized for his cautious approach after a 2-0 lead in the first half of the first half which allowed Arsenal to close the gap again through a Nicolas Pepe penalty.

However the Yellow Submarine squad did not rely on their early advantage when controlling the first half without scoring an important goal away from home.

Arsenal almost opened the scoring before the break when Aubameyang’s effort went just wide.

The hosts started the second half better but squandered two of their best chances to advance through a goal away.
