BUCHAREST, Romania: Didier Deschamps has refused to blame Kylian Mbappe after failing to complete a penalty that led to France’s elimination from Euro 2020 when they face Switzerland in a dramatic round of 16 action here.

Switzerland scored two late goals in the 90th minute to take the game into extra time before the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) striker failed to complete a penalty.

Swiss goalkeeper Sommer saved Mbappé’s next attempt to get rid of France.

“No one can blame him,” the French manager said. “When you take responsibility, it can happen. He’s very impressed with the situation.”

Mbappé was calmed down by his teammates after the kick following nine perfect kicks.

“Kylian took responsibility, he felt guilty, but he shouldn’t have felt that way,” Deschamps said. “The squad stays united, it’s always been that way.”

French captain Hugo Lloris is similar.

“We won together, we lost together,” he said. “We’re all responsible for being knocked out at this stage. No one blames anyone.”
